Going hunting without a Firearm license or Game license....

Post by Hunt2eat » 19 Jul 2016, 6:33 pm

Hey Y'all

Another (noob) question(s).....

I'm fully licensed (firearm and game) but the old man isn't, what's the protocol with him joining me deer hunting in Vic. I know he can't shoot. But can he come with?

Also, Little River range, same question, can he come? Can he take a few shots? Was there for the first time and wasn't asked for my license at all.

Thanks!

Hunting on public land, can come, but can't handle firearms, certainly can't shoot.
Hunting on private property, well it's 'private' property.
Range can come, can shoot while you observe, can't both shoot together.

As far as I know he can come with you to watch you hunt deer, just he can't hunt the deer or shoot the gun.

Not even allowed to handle firearms or ammunition, or be left in charge of them.

Take him to WA and he can shoot and hunt under the immediate supervision of you as a licenced firearms owner.

In Victoria an unlicenced person can only handle firearms or ammunition under the immediate supervision of a _qualified instructor_ and only at an approved range. A licenced shooter is not a qualified instructor as far as I'm aware.

of course he can come..... it is after all public land.

Little river; the law's the law, either licence to shoot or supervised, regardless of whether you're asked for your lic. To what degree you or your father comply is a matter for you fellas..... regardless of whether or not the SSAA ask...

Incorrect , a licensed shooter supervising at a range is sufficient. The supervising shooter must be in the very near vicinity of course.

Quite right, my mistake.
Thanks for the correction.

At any range in Vic they can load and shoot under a licensed persons supervision.
He can't handle ammo or firearm on public or private land
if you don't get stuck, your not trying hard enough

I wouldn't risk it myself.. depi/police are going to see 2 people, 1 license and 1 firearm, depends who you get but its a bit sketchy at best

As long as the person holding the firearm when intercepted is licensed there is no issue. That would be like an unlicensed passenger getting in strife because he 'might' drive. Two guns, different story.......

What a sad state of affairs that this question is being asked. Relax, we aren't China.. yet. Bring the old man along for the hunt and have a nice time.

Thanks for the info. Dad wanted to get a firearm license but in the mean time just wanted him to join me in the bush.

So if I understand correctly, just to clarify. 1 gun and if I'm carrying all ammo, and his just walking with me there should be no problem.

I think I'll double check with little river on Sunday when I'm down there.

Thanks!

I shoot at little river all the time with unlicensed shooters, as long as your Ol man is following the rules and operating safely I can pretty much guarantee they won't even ask to see a license. I can say 100% that your dad can legally shoot with you at little river. You just can't both shoot at the same time on different benches. You must be observing him while he is shooting.

Unless of course there is another licensed shooter that is happy to supervise him... then you and him could both shoot at the same time as well.
