Man arrested and stolen firearms recovered - Far South Coast
Thursday, 18 August 2016 07:57:58 PM

Police have arrested a man and recovered five stolen firearms after a public appeal on the Far South Coast.

Sometime between Friday 5 August 2016 and Tuesday 16 August 2016, a shed on a property at South Wolumla, south of Bega, was broken into and five registered firearms and ammunition were stolen.

The weapons included a Rossi side by side double barrel 12 gauge shotgun, a Winchester 30-30 calibre rifle, a Norica .22 calibre rifle, a Howa 270 calibre rifle and an Iver Johnson .22 calibre rifle.

Officers from Far South Coast Local Area Command made a public appeal for assistance yesterday morning (Wednesday 17 August 2016), resulting in a number of people coming forward with information.

Police attended two properties at Candelo yesterday afternoon, recovering four of the firearms and two boxes of ammunition.

A fifth firearm was located today in bushland east of Candelo.

A 19-year-old man was arrested and charged with a number of firearm offences as well as possess ammunition, and larceny.

He was refused bail to appear at Batemans Bay Local Court tomorrow (Friday 19 August 2016).

Source.

Court today, hopefully he's getting reamed as we speak.

I'll say well done to the police for catching this deadshit, now all we need is a judge who can actually hand out the appropriate punishment!

Whilst I think it's great that these registered firearms have been recovered I don't think it's appropriate for police to get the credit. They treat the public as a revenue source and then expect us to work with them when there is a problem. The public are the ones who have located the stolen weapons not police. The police need to be thankful that the public still help them. Without us they would solve NOTHING! Maybe they should remember that occasionally.

Hate the Highway Patrol, not the other units. Sure, Highway Patrol may have an affect on drivers WHEN THEY ARE SEEN AND NOT HIDING IN CAMO PAINTED CARS BEHIND TREES WITH A LASEGUN! These are the revenue raisers, not really GD or other units. Yes GD's can issue fines, but Highway Patrol are the cash cows.

In NSW, wages, uniforms etc come from the RTA or whatever they are called these days. Not the Police budget.

These guys get paid 1 weeks wages when called in on a day off. No other Police Officer receives this perk. They rarely deal with DV or other crimes. Imagine getting 1 weeks wages for getting called in to drive a high performance car around all day (or hiding in the shade of a tree).

Yep, social media can also help when something happens in a small community. Sometimes its easy to find "people of interest" in a small town, unless a transient is involved, but, people have memories and there's CCTV popping up alot. In my street, theres about 18 houses that have cameras fitted to their homes.

My best mate spent 20+ years in a variety of Police specialist units and I can assure you he wasn't a ticket printer, nor had any interest in such. He'd sooner issue a warning than a ticket.

It was alot more important to him that a positive result for a victim was achieved. Having screaming family in close proximity wouldn't have helped either......

Sometimes, he had to deal with incidents that happened in 1 week that other people MAY experience in 1 lifetime and for that reason (apart from about 1m others) he will eternally have my respect. He's received Commissioner's Awards, but, you'd never know. He aint a braggard.

That's awesome that you found the 1 in a million!
Sorry though but they all wear the same uniform and regardless of how they are before they join, they all (except for your mate) change into the authoritarian revenue scum that we know them to be. They aren't called the "Pigs" because we like them!
It may not be completely their fault because there seems to be a common misconception that police are supposed to serve and protect or some other BS like that. The truth is that they are enforcers of "policy" and the policy of our governments is to tax as hard as possible. If people are dilusional enough to believe the crap coming out of their TV sets which constantly tells otherwise then they are beyond help.

For years I've wondered how Police officers turn so anti-gun. It can't be coincidental, and there is such minimal use of firearms against Police that it can't be a matter of fearing guns. They don't see enough firearms homicide or injury to be sick of the wasted life like they do car crashes. So somewhere there must be "anti-gun" teaching going on within the ranks, but if so why has it never been leaked to the public?

I was in Perth being told by two firearms officers why I had to post my rifles back to Victoria or hand them in for destruction, and the whole time I was just thinking to myself, do these guys go home every night actually believing this is how you serve the public, this is what gives them that warm fuzzy glow when they knock off work every afternoon?

They were telling me that I had done_nothing_ wrong at all, had done everything that the WA laws required of me, it was not my fault I had gotten sick for several weeks, it was not my fault the Eucla Police had given me a two-week import travel permit (to bring a firearm in to be registered in WA) instead of the correct one-to-three-month temporary travel permit ($54 per month allowing travel and use within the state as a visitor), but because the law specifically does not allow a temporary permit to be renewed more than once _under any circumstances at all_, my Victorian-registered firearms would be "unregistered" in WA the following day when the current permit (that I was in there to renew) expired. These guys were also sporting shooters and were sorry they could do nothing for me...I didn't get the impression they were sorry in the least.

QLD cops are a special breed all to themselves. Historically the single most broadly corrupt police force in the country. Also pretty useless and incompetent.

Victorian TOG [Highway Patrol] are widely and justifiably regarded by ordinary Coppers and civilians alike as s#itbags, tattoos on hands and necks and such, they are a breed apart.
A year ago i was pulled over by a female one who who placed her right hand on my drivers door sill so I could not miss BOHICA, jail tattooed across the web of her hand between index finger and thumb.
I was accused of blocking the right lane but that story rapidly changed to unsafe lane change when I pointed out that I would be using GPS data, she is a liar and a feral bogan with a badge.
Your general duties Victorian Copper is IME a completely different breed, I have assisted them and they have assisted me, I help them if possible but if I saw a Togger being beaten on the side of the road I would drive on.
Last time I interacted with the NSW highway patrol would have to be 20 yrs back, this d**khead hopped out of his " interceptor" dressed in motorcycle leggings, jodhpurs, mirror sunglasses and leather cap !
He plainly lived in a cartoon, probably got slapped at school by blokes like me for being a dobber.
We actually had a creature like that a Maitland Boys High School back in '67, "Dobber O 'Connor" he ended up being a Copper but then so did "Jackie" Gleason who was a great bloke.

I've got serious reservations about the NSW police after me contacting them a while back.

I supplied them with a name of a property owner,, the address,, and a list of firearms and ammunition,, that were stored in an unlocked wardrobe
at the property.

The owner lived elsewhere (that address was also supplied) and only attended the property once or twice per year over a weekend.

The owner was unlicensed, and the firearms were unregistered.

Despite my information, the police never visited or acted on the information in any way.

I had previously spoken to the owner on several occasions, pointing out that he really needed to get his act together and become legal.
He simply ignored the opportunity to do so, and and the situation did not change.
I couldn't sleep well at night, thinking that as a result of his actions, some poor person may end up dead.
That is why I did what I did,,,,,,,,, but like I already said,, The NSW police did not act on the information.

Was he involved in criminal activity or just a bloke that doesn't agree with licencing and registration?
Maybe NSW Police are actually prioritising taking firearms off criminals rather than turning an otherwise lawfull person into a criminal purely because a law was written that he should be?
For a very, very long time all Australian firearms owners "secured" their firearms exactly this way, and no harm ever came of it.

I mean't in criminal activity :-)

Somebody who merely steals a firearm because he likes firearms, or wants to hunt but can't get licenced, is very different to somebody who steals a firearm to use as a weapon to intimidate or injure other people.

Pushing for stealing a firearm to be treated the same is just perpetuating the myth that stolen legally-owned firearms is where criminals get their guns from.

But not for stealing one?? How should stealing be dealt with? a stern talking to? perhaps sit in the naughty corner?
No. Steal a gun - do time.... and lose an arm perhaps for a first offence, leg for second, head for third. They might think twice next time, their mates might also consider changing their ways.

Stealing a gun should be treated exactly the same as stealing any property.
If they steal it with _intent_ to commit a violent crime then the penalties should be _extremely_ harsh. If you traffic a stolen gun, or even a legally-owned gun, to somebody that then uses it for violent crime then that should also be dealt with extremely harshly.

And I agree, penalties for all crimes against people are pathetic these days.

In Perth twenty years ago, a good friend's sister was murdered at her work by her estranged husband with a rifle stolen from his father.
And more recently, two drug addict dealers went hunting for my daughter one night due to some perceived slight (she probably accused them of being users and dealers - this pair are Dumb and Dumber on ice!) and when they found she didn't live at the house they'd gone to, they fired a round into the front door frame with a 686 revolver. They both got a couple years inside is all. An interesting-but-not-gun-related side story from that one is that the detective I delivered the dealers' mobile phone to (which had photos of them playing with the weapon and ammo they used) was very soon afterwards charged with _many_ child pornography offences, and convicted.
