Reshape Stock

I have an old 30-06 timber stock , the previous owner shaved too much off the fore end and it doesn't fit too well
As I have decided to repair it and it is also cracking along the length of the fore end I think due to its thinness it hasn't travelled
much past the mag inlet so far
I have inserted magnum screws to pull the stock together and now want to build the fore end up to make it thicker so as to strengthen
it without touching the rear part of the stock from trigger inlet back
Has anybody tried this and what sort of epoxy would be best for adhering and building up of the stock fore end ?
Some have suggested auto filler but I don't think it has the strength to with hold the jar when the rifle is fired also it doesn't take to timber so good

Are there any suggestions,? any would help

Thanks blokes i'm a little swayey with the Acraglas I can kill two birds with one stone , once I do the stock I can glass bed
the barrel

The Acraglas is just fiberglass resin put in a kit form with some dye and wax. If you want it strong still add some glass fiber either woven or mat

Yep. Reinforcing (matting) is required for heavy lay ups. Building up an area is a different kettle of fish than using it as glue. Other epoxy bedding compounds have fillers such as powdered steel in them.

The ones such as the JB weld and Devcon with the small steel powders make them harder for the purpose of being able to machine them. Although I have taken a dremel like tool to them and they are very easy to work (soft as) anyway the fiberglass mats or woven have long fibers that will give although some flexibility (think canoes) they give greater breaking strength.

I use Devcon for shaping intake ports in cylinder heads, magic stuff.

well depends what is available, how cured off/dried it is and how much of the stock you're having to rebuild. there are a plethora of timbers if its purely cosmetic, and as for glues, there are a tonne of very good adhesives, the real trick is having both surfaces married properly and clamped hard enough for an effective lamination of the two timbers. can also cheat and add dowels internally to the lamination if the wood pieces are big enough...

The build up thickness would be approx.8-10 mm bottom and sides after squaring off this would taper back to1-2mm at trigger
While building up the stock I would like to add some weight and maybe a heavier wood would be better kill two birds with one stone
I was wondering wether gum or something in that hardness and weight would do
The fore end is fairly fine it wasn't so bad when the rifle was barrelled for 22-250 but putting it back to 30-06 I think its too light and will recoil
like a horse kick so bulk and weight is what is probably needed

Mate if you want hard get some Jam tree lol, be there a month of sundays sanding it tho

Laminating more timber is potentially problematic with stability. It would have to be a well seasoned and correctly milled on the quarter. Any back cut timber will definitely cause a wandering fore-end. Theoretically a good idea but execution is critical.

Building it up with epoxy would be the simplest and most stable fix. Either way you are going to end up with a rather patch work looking finish unless you paint and laquer it. If you square bottom and both sides, then first affix a bottom plate with grain running longitudally and vertically, re-square sides then laminate side plates with grain in the same attitude. The trick with gluing is to wet both sides thoroughly and apply enough pressure for full contact adhesion with out forcing all the glue out. It's a balancing act. As I said, theoretically simple but plenty of opportunity for screw ups. To improve stability you could then channel out the fore end and back fill with a stabilising resin product. A lot of work for a potentially questionable result/finish.

Personally I would consider a new/second hand stock.

Is it a standard stock? Nothing secondhand around?
You could get a nice piece of wood and start from scratch.

yeha i wouldnt go doing a laminate job unless you can marry the surfaces properly

No Bladeracer its a mauser werke mod 2000 it was made under contract in America I think in the 60's couldn't find a second hand
one in good condition they're not a common rifle so I started doing this one up already put the magnum horizontal bolts in and a
few other small things and only have the build up to go
Money is a bit tight at present so just trying to get it back shooting as its pretty dry up here and scrub cattle are causing large amounts of damage
to fences and crops i'm shooting them with a 25-06 at present but shot placement is of the utmost so want to get the old 30-06 going for a little more

if its any good to you you can have this old voere stock for postage?

it has the tang safety cut out but that would be easier to fill than the forearm
but it is mauser and was a sporter barrel, you are quite welcome to it if you want

Can't you just buy one of those $100 laminated stock from the USA?. A few here have bought them, for all sorts of rifles. Buy direct or maybe from brownells I can't remember the name. Some one will remember.

Yeah. Sorry, mate. Not trying to be a downer, just pointing out some potential issues. If you wanted to go the timber route, I'd be inclined to try to match the timber colour as close as possible.
If you go the resin route, I'd cut a diagonal line (or at least heavily mask) and pair it back evenly for a distance so you have a definite stop between the epoxied section and the old timber. Remember to cut back all the old finish to ensure a good bond of epoxy to timber. 80grit paper should do it and leave good tooth for mechanical bond.

Geez Marksman I may have jumped the gun mate I was sanding the old stock down and found tons of shatter cracks along the full length
of it, it looks like someone has run over the rifle at some stage they certainly covered it well to sell it to me
The whole thing has turned into a major job but I don't think its fixable
So mate does that offer still stand with that stock that you have if so I would like to take you up on it and count my losses on this one

Yeah Oldbloke not many left is there we're a dying breed
Ya know Gwion I took a little fellow fishing on a beach once he had MS and they used to wheel him around in a stroller pram
I used to work with his dad and we were camping with them at the place where we were fishing
Anyway I threw his line out and he caught a small fish something he had never been able to do with his own parents so on catching this
fish he peed himself with all the excitement and he started to cry because he said his mum would go crook now that he had wet himself
So I had no option I wheeled him out up to his neck ,looked down at him and said '' she won't know now will she '' and the smile on his face was treasure

My point being anybody can be a good person but they choose not to be
