No access to shooting sites.

News and events in the media and political arena relating to firearms.

No access to shooting sites.

Post by xDom » 23 Mar 2019, 6:36 pm

I have access to the internet at work, on a quiet weekend day or a night shift I like to do some random googling. Up until now this forum has been allowed, one of the very few gun related sites available.

Went to check in today but it came up with a blocked site message " Weapon sites are prohibited".

Seems they have a blanket ban on anything hunting, sport shooting related.

This annoys me. The term "weapon" implies that I plan on using my legally purchased, stored and used rifles for the purposes of harm against another human.

I get it that it's the companies internet service so they can restrict as they like but I resent the implication that my hobby is somehow wrong or immoral.

I like to shoot foxes and rabbits, I'm probably of more of a service to the environment than others who judge me.

That's piss poor, but unfortunately, no longer surprising.

It would be interesting to know if the owners, board or whomever makes such decisions did it on their own initiative or whether some commercial pressures were applied.

If your office or company employs more than say 10 people its very likely your manager asked your IT guy or the company responsible to provide computing services to ban inappropriate sites. As its usually past of the policies of the organisation.

Its also likely that the company guy took it upon himself to ban all websites with gun in their name. On his own accord.

ISP never block sites unless directed by the government. Have a chat with your boss, you manager or the IT guy, they might put an exception for this site.

as an IT Manager i can tell you that the most likely scenario is the ops company uses a third party proxy whitelist/blacklist service.

Enoughgun has finally been added to that list, nothing. Sinister or anything just an update of the software.

You should be able to apply to get it manually over written with your IT dept.

I can guarantee all the IT guys have their sites whitelisted.

Considering I’m not supposed to be looking at the internet for non work related purposes, I don’t think I’ll take this up with management!!
To me, being a new shooter, it was more about the way the general population views our activities.
I have even noticed the unsure responses from a few people I’ve spoken to about my new interest.

Find a new group of friends. I don't bother trying to convince people that have a pre-dermined view against firearms, that they aren't as bad or evil as they have been led to believe anymore. It's a waste of my time, they are generally the type that believe everything they see and hear on television, vote according to "opinion polls", or agree with all of the "accepted" opinions just to be in the majority. They are almost incapable of making their own decisions in life, can't reason with idiots mate.

The antis dont even understand the firearms about which they preach, Sam Lee was pontificating the other day and stated that military style semiautos are more dangerous than civilian style because they are capable of being fired at a faster rate.

This is the ignorance cloaked in righteous indignation we are up against.

The use of polymer in a stock apparently makes them more deadly, who knew?

Most people these days have a smart phone with a data plan and a web browser, so if I need to check something I just use my own phone.

Same happened at my work I looked up the filter service they were using as like has been said it is 3rd party and just bans anything.
A site that sells law, security and tactical gear even got blocked simple because products have filtered terms in them. Bloody ridiculous.

my work is the same. It was fine up until early last week then , it came with a proxy message about being banned. Im not sure how the blacklist is compiled and what feeding entities are responsible for compiling that list, but it sucks.

I cant use my phone at work so I'll have to resort to catching up with the forum news at home. Im just waiting for the ban to come at home aswel.

crazy things. The self proclaimed righteous are doing the best to tarring up our sport and hell bent driving us underground. :?

85% of the internet usage is non-related to business.Same thing applies with employees talking football or Sharon telling Di about her latest herbal diuretic teas three partitions away for all and sundry to hear.
Start banning all trivial non\related business conversations and access to media and dumb down your own workforce.

I don't know about the rest , but working for a company that treats its employees as peanuts is not conducive to a productive workplace.

There's also the issue with censorship. I could research everything about midget throwing and wife carrying sports but now i cannot get information from an unbiased sport \ recreational forum such as this.

It's in our policy at my work that firearm related sites are not to be accessed. They fall in the same category as porn, etc., but they haven't gone to the length of restricting access fortunately.

I don't know of many companies who like people using their computers during working hrs for other than work related stuff be it guns or personal stuff unless you have a prior agreement lets face it they own the gear they're entitled to stipulate the using of it no different than someone using your mobile phone without permission
Inlight of what has happened in NZ i'm not surprised companles have used gun talk as a don't use our equipment to talk guns as a muscle flex

I'm reading most have missed the mark by a significant margin.
The OP has expressed an issue with topic discrimination in relation to firearms. And not explicitly about the acceptable usage policy of their company, and whether you should be allowed to use your companies facilities for recreational use. That requires another thread and probably not suited here.

On topic, I can understand wrt to recent events in NZ why companies have upped the ante and forums such as these are banned. But should they be ?
Apart from the graphic content in threads with dead animal carcasses, is that bad to warrant banning it alongside dark pornography and other nefarious sites ?

My advise is to avoid clicking on banned sites because you may get a please explain from your department director on information provided to them by IT sec.

Which, in all probability, has got absolutely nothing to do with your employer or your employment.

xDom, get over it.
Your employer will provide internet access for work related purposes. That you have found time to peruse sites other than those specifically employment related is of no consequence.
I don't know about Victorian legislation but here in Queensland the Act, Regulations, and most other documentation, refers to weapons. Like it or not, that is how the politicians want it to be.
My former employers have specific policies which all employees must read and acknowledge by signing, and transgressions can invoke penalty up to and including dismissal. Harsh? Not at all; you are using their equipment in their time.
Your employer probably uses the services of another provider who applies filters that can be specific, broad brush, and not negotiable by employees. Even if you were to take your own PC to work and request a "guest account", those sites will still be blocked because you are using their server.

I have just read the West Australian paper and an MP did not get a E-mail from a professor because the filter picked up the word cum laude in the topic.Welcome to the new world.I have just started to do maintenance as a full time career and I now have an I pad and iPhone on a holder on the windscreen and cooler box plugged in the lighter to keep my water cold. This new tech is near essential for work but there will always be a dark side to the internet.
