Dropping a rifle

Post by scrolllock » 14 May 2014, 1:39 pm

Hi guys,

I had a close call on the weekend with nearly knocking my rifle off the bench. (not loaded, while setting up)

Caught it before it went over so no harm done. Would have been about a 3 foot drop onto concrete though if it had gone over.

How hard is it to damage a rifle from dropping it? Can you bugger the barrel or wonk the action or anything?

Just typically...

I don't know if this means anything in relation to you, but I've dropped my .223 savage too many times to remember... Concrete, wood, you name it, I've dropped it on it :D That's why I love the fact that it has a synthetic stock!

Seriously though I think the scope is by far the easiest component of the rifle to damage due to glass etc, and so far I've had no problems with anything, it's quite beaten up though.

Edit: I think it is definitely possible to hurt your rifle by dropping it, however unlikely.

Yep, love synthetic stocks.

Nope, if it has a wooden stock it is the easiest thing in the world to crack the heel or wrist, I fit recoil pads even to my .22's, not for recoil but simply to save the wood.

I was referring to my rifles with synthetic stocks, no wooden stocks for me for exactly the reason you're saying, I'd damage them too easily :D

Yep, stainless synthetic are definately practical. Most of my hunting ones are but I still have a few synthetic/blued or blued/wood in the safe. I often wonder that synthetic/stainless shotguns are not more popular.

I recently read a post on another forum where an owner knocked his Anschutz 1712 off its rest onto concrete and the stock snapped in half, there were no pics though. so glad that I went with synthetic on my Remingtons.

Man, I'd be devastated.

Luckily mine didn't end up going over, but I can see that happening :(

Might have to lay a bit of carpet down next to my bench or something in future.
