Finally cleaned all the archery, knife, and fly tying stuff off the kitchen table and set it up to be used as intended, then went and loaded 50 rounds 22-250 with sierra 1330 projectiles and BM8208. In a while going out to dads to yard the bulls for reading to sell, and hopefully go out and put aforementioned 22-250 rounds to use on a cull permit property

What are you making or tying?

Trout opening was a bust, think we spent more time telling lies, reminiscing and planning future trips than real fishing as we ended up behind someone else who got there early. Furled leader was the beans, so will roll up a few different varieties for future use.

Went out friday before picking my daughter up from school and manged 3 rainbows and 1 brown locally. They were all pretty sluggish, so possibly still getting over the spawning run - particularly the jack brown who was pretty thin and pickaxe like.

Last night went and sat over a little gully junction I shot a hind in earlier this year last couple of hours of light. Was freezing cold and windy but saw nothing other than a few wallabies and a lone wombat. Glad to have the new shooting stick/bipod as it gives me much more flexibility than relying on stump/branch

Last time I tied a fly I'm pretty sure it was several of my bead eyed woolly bugger variants.
Arrows, it was 300 spine carbons with 200gn brass inserts and 125-130gn heads for a total weight of 585gn. Fly absolutely beautiful from my 70+lb martin ml 10 longbow.

A bugger would be close to my one fly only pattern. Certainly in the top 3.

Less than 8.5gr/lb, guessing they're shifting! Figured it'd have to be a longbow and not be really twangy at that low GPP. Looking forward to seeing them letting some air out of something

Vanguard Scout. They may possibly be a fraction too short for me to shoot completely comfortably at full extension, but they'll do otherwise. Shot both the 30-06 and air rifle off them with no worries.

Yesterday finished sorting gear after a 3 month trip away from home.

Bit of gardening too.

Yesterday rejoined the SSAA after a 6 year break. I initially joined just after Hoddle St, but let my membership laps in 2018, dejected about their lack of political punch. But they seem to be improving a bit in that regard and they have a range only 15 minutes from home. I never liked the magazine turning up in my mail box either. I consider that a security issue. But a pdf option is available now. So, decided to sign up.

I was recently given about 1.5kg of old powders plus abt 250 LRPs and 80 308 bullets. Plus 150 308 cast bullets.
Been checking it out and what components I have that I can put all of it to good use.
Looks like I can use all the bullets and abt 90% of the powder. :P

Tomorrow I will load up 6 rounds of the oldest powder to confirm pressure indicators before loading a ladder test.

G'day,

Yesterday I drove my basic 2009 Subaru Impreza to Geelong to trade it on a low-mileage 2021 Mazda CX-5 all-wheel-drive. The old Impreza had done 307,500 kms. which is pretty good for a basic car. It was mostly country travel. It's still a good usable vehicle, but only worth $500 as a trade in - probably for parts. I wanted to be sure my wife has a car that will see her safe as she travels around teaching horse riding for the next few years before we fall off the perch. The CX-5 is like a mobile computer: everything is programmed electrically and there are safety sensors that beep and tweet if the car strays a foot off-line. The car manual is a masterpiece of computerese and safety warnings - damn all lawyers - made more complex probably by being translated into English from Japanese. Frankly I'm already missing the simplicity of the Impreza!

Safety is good, but so is simple!

Swapped rings on the air rifle the other day so headed to the folks to re-sight and then sat over a hedge and shot another rabbit kitten.

Came up with a neat little phone holder to act as a camera. Just an L bracket bolted to a flexi tripod with a few rare earth magnets attached to the bracket. A couple of large washers slipped behind the phone case holds it in place but easy to remove. Wouldn’t put it up a tree, but for a ground blind it works really well.

I invited a young bloke to attend a Cowboy Action shoot, which he did today. It was awesome seeing his face light up when he was shooting a Single Action Army in .45 Colt, an 1873 Winchester lever-action rifle, also in .45 Colt, a 12ga. coachgun, and a Colt 1911 in .45ACP - I think he's hooked now :-)
Was a very good day out, I love introducing newbies to shooting.

Met one of the Homestead Pyfons again..

This one is about 2 metres long.
Saw him drinking from a puddle in the house yard yesterday morning, but this morning nearly ran over him when I came around the hangar, and found the path in front of my ute was wall-to-wall Pyfon..
Serious panic-stop, and was able to avoid giving him a Bridgestone Makeover...

Seriously pretty snake, and seem to be in large numbers around here the past few years.
Much prefer them over the bitey snakes.

Forgot to mention; 3 weeks ago, we were cleaning up at the other homestead, and had a 2.5 metre-long one follow us around like a freaking dog for about half an hour.
Wasnt aggressive at all; just seemed interested in what we were doing.

Seriously cool, but also somewhat unsettling as well.
Disconcerting when something that large can be so silent, while terribly interested in what we were doing.

Ahh well; any day ya dont get bitten is a good one...

Yeah they might not kill from biting but as a trade off they have bigger stronger teeth and a stronger biting force to hold stuff while they wrap it up. I really wouldnt want to upset one.

Heh...

I seem to upset about 75% of these guys I meet.
Thought we'd have to walk home back in March, when one nearly car-jacked the ute, after we stopped to take some pics...
I'd also point out they are really reluctant to bite when disturbed; most of it is show(albeit LOUD/scarey show), and many of the strikes I've seen from them arent even with an open mouth.
[As opposed to a King Brown, who is all business from the first Hiss..]
Not that I'd intentionally get into a wrestling match with one.

Ahhh well; seriously hard to NOT be supremely impressed to see one of these guys up close and personal..
And terribly hard to not give them a passing pat..
Given I've patted the odd one as they cruised past, I'm starting to suspect I'm on a Pyfon-Fondler Offenders Register...
Which might explain how so many of them are cranky with me before we've even gotten to know each other..

Going by the various sizes we've seen the past 12 months, I'd guess we have 5 different ones of these guys floating around the homestead complex.
Pretty sure at least 2 of them live in the old dis-used ceramic drains under the laundry building.

Awesome snake to have around; significantly less of the bitey ones around as a result.

Met this little guy(Just under a metre long) back in June; too cold for him to hold himself upright to make good on his strike pose, so I had to pick him up and put him in a bush beside the road so he didnt get run over..
He was NOT HAPPY with the liberties I took!
A very angry, hissy bush watched me hop back in the car and drive off...

:D snakes are grouse.

Yesterday had my second crack at powder coating some cast bullets. Went well after a couple of trial runs.

Also yesterday for the first time in 47 years ph an old class mate. Turns out he is into shooting too. We will catch up at the local range in a few weeks.

Loaded a few test rounds with some powder coated bullets for the 30.06 today.

Bottled more beer. :drinks:

I'm now looking for a cheap .309-120 grain mould.
Or perhaps a .225-55gr mould.

Prices for moulds have risen from about $55 to about $80 in just 18 months or so.

Yaay

Nice Jorlcrin, wish we had something like those guys down here. If it's got scales and wriggles, I ain't waiting around to find out what it is as there is only 1 non venomous (as opposed to 'deadly') snake around here, and they're in short supply. We got a hold of some at uni and a 2m long bugger is surprisingly heavy and very strong. One girl got handcuffed early on and had to be rescued by the lecturer

Did a bit of my favourite pruning today (involving a chainsaw), cleaned the gutters before the rain and played around in the shed for a bit. Yesterday, I swapped the 4x40 Nikko Stirling for a 2-7x32 Tasco on the air rifle, then headed out to the olds to re-sight it in after a roughy in the shed got it close. Pretty sure I shot another rabbit kitten, but didn't get my hand on it to confirm.

Brought a length of hessian and other bits and pieces to make a hide of sorts so I can set up anywhere(ish) for the bunnies as it's waaay to dry to sneak around at the moment and I've seen nothing but kittens at the permanent hide I have set up. Hoping to catch up with the farmer over the back who I know slightly and see if I can jump the fence and go shoot some bunnies amongst the rocks to do a bit of 'terminal ballistic performance' testing :P

We put our oldest cow in the freezer. I'd like to keep her hide so I spent the afternoon fleshing the hide but only got about halfway, I'll try to finish it tomorrow. Should be about 2200mm by 1800mm finished.
