i've been eating it for years . used to be able to shoot as many as i wanted down tenterfeild . depending on property owners wishes it's a bit harder for me to get goat meat these days . i'm selective about the species of goat to get the best meat . yeah i know they're fairly interbred , but some have strong throwbacks in physical traits . best tasting i ever had was a long haired nanny that looked like a dutch variety . hardly any gamie-ness at all in the meat . recent one was a short haired "brindle" coated nanny . both of these were larger than the smaller white variety that don't seem to taste as good. i use chicken stock in my goat curry , and only lightly brown the meat in a covered saucepan with a decent amount of olive oil before adding stock and vege's . yep. that's on the menu tonight :D

i only shoot goats/deer for meat , unless the property owner wants them gone . they might compete with livestock for graze, but their a resource in my book

besides seeing eagles up close on culled carcases, the most amazing bird i've seen is the major mitchell cockatoo. with their crest up and wings extended their beautiful . do a google search on images if you haven't seen one . pics on my iphone don't do them justice . you using a good camera pete ?

I seen them when I went to Booroorban in April. Couldn't quite get a good photo though.
I'm using a nikon D7000 dskr with a 70-300mm nikkpr lense. It does an ok job but I'm planning on getting a nikkor 200-500mm f5.6 lense soon for the longer shots/little birds. This trip I've manage to photograph mallee ringnecks,Bourke parrots, yellow naped honeyearers, striped honeyeaters,Jacky winters, female red cap robins,2 species of butcher birds, and a species of swift I've yet to identify

Re: What did you do today?

Had a couple of weeks off but didn't get a lot of hunting in between the good half being away for a week and both girls sick (at the same time :? ). Did manage to come across the first fallow I've seen in the flesh for a while, a little button buck but it was crossing from private to plantation on the road, but confirmed that there were fallow where I thought there were (and only 200m from public huntable land). A bit of a walk showed up some promise, some very fresh sign and possibly busted 2 deer in different places that I didn't get to see. This area was burnt maybe 18 months ago, so the bracken is THICK and noisy, but there's nothing much else except in the gully bottoms in the way of brush.

I'd decided I wanted to get a small tarp for emergency rain showers, so I bought a few m2 of some UL fabric and started on a waterproof(ish) gun sock that I can keep in the back for downpours. Good thing I did as I had a heap of trouble getting the sewing machine working properly before I worked out that the thread type was the wrong one. Then this morning I knocked up a 1.5x2m tarp with trekking pole/stick holders and tie-outs in a bit over an hour. The 'assistant' then asked if we could put it up, so we did that and I had a bit of a play with various other setups. Just have to get hold of a few ultra light tent pegs and some light reflective tie out cord (using thick para cord for trialing).

I've seen Midnight Run a few times, but not in the past twenty years or more. I enjoyed it, might have to find it again.

Spent five hours driving home after an awesome three days shooting Cowboy at Bendigo, what a blast!
The shoot-offs today were huge fun. Mano-a-Mano, two shooters on the clock, fastest goes into the next round, slowest is out. I shot cap & ball Friday, yesterday and this morning but decided black is too much of a lottery for the shoot-offs, you just don't know whether they'll all go off. So I borrowed a pair of Vaqueros. I made the mistake of declining to use their ammo though and used my own, which the pistols didn't play well with - six of the ten rounds were light strikes, despite running the five around the clock two more times. I bet they'll fire just fine in the rifle when I test them tomorrow - oh well :-)
