Flash hider question.

223 rifle 18 inch barrel.

I don’t need a muzzle brake, but I do need a flash hider.

I’m considering this one. But how does it fit up to hide the flash.
Note ports missing on left side. So is that top or bottom of barrel ?
May seem obvious but I’m not certain how the gasses react channeled. Or how you defuse the ignition.
Or whatever the hell it does and how.

I don’t want a shroud because some d**khead ranger will insist it’s a suppressor

There's only one thing that suppresses the muzzle flesh we ain't allowed to have them flash hider is the biggest missnoma I have ever come across actually makes the flash worse because it directs the flash perpendicular to where the barrel is pointing in other words more surface area that's showing back at you or whatever is in front of you

Depends how it's timed what's at 12 o'clock what's at 10 o'clock 2 o'clock six o'clock depends on the angles

It tries to direct the flash away from your line of sight. I think you really need to just try some different designs, and yes, cheap Ebay ones are good for testing the see if the design works for you.

The bottom is generally blocked so muzzle blast doesn't blind you with dust when shooting prone. If you're not going to be prone you could index it with the blocked section on top and see if it works better for you. If you put the blocked section upward and have some sort of shrouding over the rifle below your line of sight it should minimise how much the flash affects your vision.

Yes but it’s only an 18 inch barrel.

Besides which I don’t hand load or have the equipment. Which makes it even more difficult.

Every image I can find of it fitted has the ports on top. But it’s just a marketing image so who knows.
But that makes sense now.

Flash hider is a bit of a misnomer, they were never intended to "hide" the flash at all. They are more correctly a flash supressor intended to disperse the flash of short barrelled rifles and rapid fire weapons to reduce vision problems in night and low visibilty shooting. The conical suppressors fitted to the No5 & No6 rifles, as well as many M/G's, also allowed the consumption of unburnt powder outside the muzzle and before it became flash in front of the shooter. Modern designs such as the 3 prong fitted to AR pattern firearms also disperse flash sufficient to not interfere with night shooting. There effect in reducing signature to observing enemy is limited. Not that hunters would have to consider that unless you're in a Crocodile Dundee movie.

i've thought about fitting a flash suppressor , but only because i carry my rifle muzzle down on the floor of my fourby and want to protect the barrel crown . if it has any other benefits , meh .
a mate stuck one on his Enfield "truck gun" . good idea . he's got the pronged one so snags or marshmallows over the campfire are doable

There’s this massive industry now for all sorts of wanky muzzle devices that do nothing really.

Like you watch the slow mo and well s**t it works better when you take the dumb thing off

And wouldn’t you know, the original ar15 type bird cage is the best by far. Expanding on that concept does not work.

I’ve ordered three cheap ones for fun really. A three prong, a short bird cage and a long bird cage that I have high expectations for.

I really wanted a close replica to what the mini 14 has. But starting to get a bit expensive for anything that truly resembled that.

I got something close to it though.

G'day Womble,
This is the flash suppressor I fitted to my sporterized No4 .303. I have no idea if it actually " suppresses " the flash as I have never fired it at night. I put it on the end of the barrel not for wank factor, but purely to protect the muzzle if I throw it into the ute muzzle first. What I have noticed is. After firing the rifle without it and then with it is it feels to stabilize muzzle lift considerably. This particular suppressor can be timed to any position you want. It comes in 5.56 and 7.62. I had my gunsmith check for clearance ( 7.62 ) for 303.

One of the three I ordered is a bit similar to that, but it’s 223 and a retro slightly inverted duck bill design. It looks pretty heavy duty though.

I’m always on the lookout for a nice example of a sporterized No 4. They are a fun gun to shoot rapidly. But it’s hard to find a nice one and a bit of a lucky dip for a shooter.

This is a picture of the old girl. Goes good as. I will shorten the barrel by an inch or 2 I reckon. Just so it swings better.
