I never owned an AR15. Not many in country back then. Relatively rare and very expensive. A few collectors might have had one.

No one importing them. No one wanted a 223 for pigs. Wouldn’t sell well in a market flooded with milsurp stuff for super cheap.

But legally there’s no reason you couldn’t own one then.

They’re not a bad rifle but they had a bad rep being a civilian version of an m16 post Vietnam war. People hated the m16 because in the jungle it was a piece of s**t.

I mean this is a time where Queensland didn’t require a pta. So you could literally just buy an skk in the mail with a free crate of ammo. Delivered to you door by Australia post. I know this because I did this when I was 18 years old.

Now that I’m all grown up I’m too incompetent to own a machete because there’s a high chance I might buy a few tins of shoe polish, join an ethnic gang and carve people up in shopping centres on my weekends. Apparently.

When we were kids we used to stay at friends of my parents in Stanthorpe. Uncle Jack has a few momentoes from his time as a commando in New Guinea. It wasn't until his funeral when I was a teen that I saw that he was one of the very few Z-Force commandos to survive the war. I saw a couple of patches that had their famous logo on them.
Anyway I got a Aus 1943 (I think) machete from his war stash put away, I will never stick it into some bin by the decree of some fat, overfed communist politician scum. It's well used but intact.

It didn't get through the upper house,. Labor held power at the time.
They did introduce stricter regulations though.

Hey Happy law abiding People of Victoria. I've got one of those Fiskars Brush Cutters that I use when out hunting / hiking. A blade with a hook end. Do I need to hand that in? Is this a machete? Are there any exemptions for these or do I have to apply? What are the chances?
