All you have to do is submit a new PTA . But yes so long as you are not changing the category you just have to fill out the change form and do not need a PTA.

my dealer doesn't seem to know any of this, and he's been in business for a few years too. i was thinking about having it shipped to my QLD gunsmith and getting him to sort it for me. i would've thought it'd be easy peasy from a licensed armourer even if it is interstate.
I just googled the form 10 , and it's for "like for like" . using a form 10 for changing calibre isn't accepted apparently . bugger . i might have to ring WLB to get the lowdown

Yep my mistake, got my form numbers wrong. I'm also confused your dealer doesn't know how to do this.
