changing calibre by interstate gunsmith

Post by bigrich » 01 Nov 2025, 3:39 pm

hey fellas, i need to engage the think tank on this forum for views and opinions . i'm going to be shipping my 270 cal ruger from QLD to t-bone shipwright in NSW for a new barrel in 7x57 mauser . my gun shop who's posting it pointed out the rifle will be coming back from interstate in a different cal and may present a problem with QLD licensing . anyone know how to sort this ? i'll just have to ring licensing i guess , but thought someone on here might have gone through this experience already . looking forward to your replies . cheers

I'm pretty sure your dealer in QLD will submit a form 10 when it arrives back from NSW. You won't need to wait for it to be approved or get confirmation back. They might charge another fee on top also. If weapons licensing have an issue (ie calibre too powerful) they'll get in touch with you.

my dealer doesn't seem to know any of this, and he's been in business for a few years too. i was thinking about having it shipped to my QLD gunsmith and getting him to sort it for me. i would've thought it'd be easy peasy from a licensed armourer even if it is interstate.

I just googled the form 10 , and it's for "like for like" . using a form 10 for changing calibre isn't accepted apparently . bugger . i might have to ring WLB to get the lowdown

Use Form 4B, must notify within 14 days.

Once you sign over a gun to a dealer it ceases to be on your licence. I sent a cat B to a NSW Armourer and it came back as cat C.

All you have to do is submit a new PTA . But yes so long as you are not changing the category you just have to fill out the change form and do not need a PTA.

Yep my mistake, got my form numbers wrong. I'm also confused your dealer doesn't know how to do this.

okay here's a update . according to QLD WLB my dealer is supposed to list the calibre change when he signs the rifle back into the shop and licensing do the rest . form 10 i believe. i rang licensing this morning to get the low down, rang my dealer to let him know and he still reckons he couldn't release my rifle back to me cause it's in a different calibre to what's on my license . FFS ! so i ring licensing AGAIN this afternoon and confirm , ring back the dealer and he finally believes me , sort of . the very helpful young lady says if i have any probs , ring them and they'll email me a dealer release form . any more of this cr@p and i'll be looking for another gun shop
he has been pretty good to me in the past but . form 4B is for changes to your actual license i was told .

to all those who offered advice and opinions, thanks.

thought i'd post the outcome in case anyone needs advice in future . i was polite and courteous and i found licensing staff to be very helpful
