Not having a go at you mate... but farming is a hard gig... im in the unique position of being able to see all sides of the story... I've done plenty of farming (only livestock) and I've also worked as a tradie... both is hard yakka... but there are huge differences... no1 being that there is no other industry other than agriculture (that I've ever seen) that has such massive price fluctuations within a 12 month period... no2 other than agriculture there is no other industry (that I've seen) that is so easily impacted by the weather... no3 other than agriculture there is no other industry (that I've seen) where its not a job, its your life, where one needs to work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week to survive & get ahead, there is no other industry where one can do so much work and get so luttle return if s**t hits the fan... and no4, other than agriculture there is no other industry (that I've seen) that is literally the backbone of the economy in every nation, yet gets so little recognition and support... and no5 there is no other industry other than agriculture that has had so minimal changes in product pricing over the past 50 years (referring to grain and such products)... thats the underlying reason for most of the government financial support... the Government wants to keep the price of food at a sustainable level...
True, agriculture gets a lots of government help in a lot of ways... but at the same time, the government also hamstrings the industry and makes it difficult every step of the way... farming is one of the hardest jobs there is... theres no doubt about it... its a constantly varying job with a million variables within every scenario...
Like I said... not having a crack... just saying... tradies work 12 hrs then go home... farmers work Dawn till dusk and then are still on call if anything goes wrong in between.... most tradies get weekends off... Im yet to meet a farmer that does.... like I said... I farm my own beef (I dont make my living off farming, coz that would be too ruddy difficult in this day and age)... ive worked in construction all my working life... ive worked in the city and country... was born in the country, raised in the country... now work in the city and spend any time i get in the country... all jobs are hard but there are a select few that are notoriously difficult, and farming is one of them...
all good mate i agree with abit of what your saying
but are you saying grain/sheep and cattle prices have only had small change in 50yrs?, yeah commodities like ,wheat barley etc do fluctuate but its the name of the game
if your a plumber and you get s**t on your hand do you whinge about it ?? you chose the job you know what your in for
a big farming fella from here said it perfectly when some non farmer asked about the drought ,,he said if your in this game and you havent prepared for bad times then your an idiot cos there's one guarantee they will come
most of the bigger farmers around here are pretty good they dont carry on when thing are getting tight ,theyve been there before
and as far as dawn till dusk 24/7 yeah at times ,but not all the time and it depends on scale big timers with feedlots/machinery going day night yeah
but the smaller fellas its hardly the case ,,whos ringing them telling them about any problem on there place if no ones there out in the paddocks ??NO ONE theyll find out when their out there or the farm hands find it ,,
and if they were chained to the place they would never have time to go fishing down the coast to the holiday home or use their big flash ski boats and other toys or trips up north fishing ,,no to mention being in the pub ,,
im sure this can be an issue for some but not all
big scale( really any size tho ) farming ie cropping is a gamble but when it comes off it pays big and around here theyve had about 4 good years on the trott
,i dont see any cocky complianing then ,,oh yeah down graded wheat /barley ,,but they got twice the yield which made up for it
but ive seen some lately (yes a rare few ) come into town fill the fuel carts some with 3 and bleed the town out
some dont give a f*** about anyone else ,we have to wait
i bet most on here would love an interest free loan or deferred payment loan or a diesel rebate or some of the benifits from primary production
had one not long ago tell me he shouldve been a tradie that where the moneys at we're then new millionaires
,,i told him ill swap bank accounts and jobs with you tomorrow
he said i have to take the debt too ,,i said fine ,doesn't seem like your having issues servicing it and you own alot more than me
he didnt go much on that
i know it sounds like im having a dig at the cockys ,i guess in some ways im having a stab ,which i do to my farming mates ,no nastiness it called hanging s**t on your mates ,, you know the old ,,here we go poor farmer ,they just laugh dont worry i get it back from them too,, but most know its a good life and they wouldnt want it any other way
but this all started from a flog that makes out hes big farmer that didnt like the fact i said there were other ways to control ferals than just shooting and i dared use the words government incentives/grants in a reply
