valid point .but knife crime amongst the youth elements in our society is up . why do people have to carry knives in inner city pub/nightclub areas ? i'm pretty sure the random searches are within certain inner city zones, brisbane/gold coast being two i know off. i think the legality of these searches has already been raised by civil rights groups . it's not just that one kid that died mate . there's been a few people who've died . minding their own business and had some @rseh#le stand over them and intimidate them with a knife . very un-australian . out in the bush a folding knife on your belt is a given . in the city , why ?

There is no reason to carry offensive knives in the city Rich. I completely agree with you.
This is not the same discussion as individual rights.

i understand the views of some fellas in letting all the ratbags take each other out , but i would like , on occasion , to be able to go into brissy and see a live band , or have a meal. without the need to carry a 12" bowie knife and learn hand to hand combat training . that's not what australia is to me, that's not what i want it to turn into . good on the government for introducing harsh penalties for carrying knives in the city , same as most on this forum would advocate for harsh penalties for gun related crime . the random searches without a warrant IS a fine line with regards to civil liberties . but i can't imagine them wasting their time with searches, unless the people they're thinking of searching are "likely looking lads ". the facial recognition cameras however could be easily used by authorities in a very undemocratic manner, gathering information on citizens like the chinese do . instead of these cameras , maybe they should put on more cops to go and arrest these "known" criminals with warrants ect . which is the reason for the cameras they say

It's not just that, it's the grubs that want to walk around with knives all day under the pitiful excuse of "individual societal rights" or some other BS religeous excuse, and when spotting a home that they think they can invade, do so with the knives. Then when being the scared sh*tless gutless life-forms that they are, kill a mother, a father, a family.
Anyone from an ape upwards can get a knife from the kitchen, a box-cutter, a camping hatchet and use it to prove they are slightly above human coma status.
This is not the same argument as for example, the suggestion by some here that if you have a firearms licence (obviously then no criminal history or mental health issues of a type that precludes one) then you should be able to carry a shorty, hidden, for self defence as the designated person in the family that self-tasks with the responsibility to keep the family safe.
Or, if other adult family members pass training, they can also arm. That's what I believe anyway.
IF the people tasked with actually, properly applying the laws we have already (which they don't - and should be criminally negligent because of what's happened already), then the right people will be armed and able to do what they need to do when the cops are an hour away in a speed camera.

absolutely agree . a group of teenagers walking around with knives is probably up to no good by the very fact they're carrying a deadly weapon . to put into context teenagers walking around at night carrying screw drivers/small pry bars and plastic bags in their pockets are very likely going to do a break and enter . in the bush having a knife is a valid , useful tool . or for work , storeman, delivery guys find belt knives/box cutters useful . carrying in the city it's intent to cause harm in my opinion . how's about that sikh fella in england recently ? henry nowak case .

i got nothing against sikh folks , but carrying knives for religious ceremonial beliefs in western society is not valid . by that reasoning , i'm a fifth generation australian redneck settler , and i should be able to carry a 12ga side by side shotty in public as it's valid to my cultural belief's, maaate!
