For those with OCD (or ripped rests and bags)

Ages ago i took the double QD studs out of a rifle that only ever gets a run in the buggy or ute. It didn't need sling studs, nor did it need two up front for a wobble I mean, bipod. And when testing different of new loads, the studs would dig into the bag and stop the recoil impulse, not great for consistency.
So they came out ages ago. I wonder where I put them.

I was buying some strange fasteners from an industrial bolt supplier I used to use in the workshops, for weird stuff nobody else carried. Strange US threads, gunsmiths would know what I mean.

Anyway I bought some button-head high-tensile screws to fill the holes, to keep the crap out. And secondarily, these hard screws clean out the loctite that the originals had to stop them spinning - a fault in that design.
Came out quite good, and clears the slots in bags and glides over padded rests from the buggy or ute.
Sure, I could've done nothing, but I can't stand unfinished looks, it's lazy.

A screw in place, and the second hole the way it looked after the swivel stud came out. Looked unfinished and unprofessional.

While I was at it, I got two 1/4" UNF countersunk grade-12 screws to replace the mashed ones that hold the M5-pattern old floorplate in.
If you had a Howa, or a European rifle, it would be M6x1.
I had to spin them in the lathe tom make them a smidgeon smaller to fit the countersink in the floorplate, but a handy dude could use a drill to chuck them in and a file a they spin.
I didn't bother blueing the edges.

Now, the threads that swing swivel studs use is 10-32 UNF. I ended up using the 5/8" long ones and they go into the forend aluminium bedding block as it is tapped for them. A very strong set-up.
The aluminium goes from up at the forend, the action beds in the V-block machined section, and continues to the rear sling stud, permanently moulded into the HS-Precision stock.
Even though this one is marked "Remington" on the recoil pad, because this stock was fitted from the factory. But any conventional stock, as long as it is a machine-screw and not a wood-screw type threaded stud (eeeech) uses the 10-32 threads.
A good time to maybe stock up on the awful 6-48 and 8-40 screws used to hold scope bases down in that afterthought piece of engineering design.
Check that place out for strange fasteners, there's even a fastener finder there to work out weird threads - it works great

All the studs with a machine thread that I have encountered have been #10-24 thread.

useful info , i've taken front sling studs out of some of my comp rifles recently so i don't get my fingers smashed when using a post rest during comps . allows me to use a different fore end hold that's improved my shooting . i'll have to write down those thread sizes

Is that right? I'm always interested in this stuff, what you say means that these small metal threads are 24 TPI which is pretty coarse...
I'll leave that there. I actually at first thought 32 TPI was too coarse.

Nothing brilliant on my part, I searched a few engineering sites on what the standard thread was, and that was what was on all of them (10-32). 32 Threads per inch. So I gave it a go.
So these ones threaded into the tapped threads on this stock beautifully, and definitely the original here is 10-32.
It's not my intention to put up something wrong if I can help it and haven't tried it myself.
Online, people will line up to tell you you're wrong for no reason at all just to say anything so I try it first before saying anything.
But I insist others do their homework too. Spending 10 bucks on 12 screws and they being wrong is not the plan.
