Where would you go if the worst happens?

Post by Wapiti » 17 Sep 2026, 7:52 am

Has anyone put any serious thought into this?
Looking at the world's political climate and the world flashpoints and the possible scenarios that could happen in the drop of a hat, does anyone have a plan?
I don't subscribe to the doomsday stuff, but would there be any point to having some sort of a plan of action if the SHTF and you needed to get away from the cities?
Where would you go? Do you have a sort of plan on where to go?

Friends are out at the moment, and are great practical people with good skills and reasonable jobs, but brought this up when a subject came up about all the instability in the world and what it would take to snap and either warmongerers to start something that would escalate and draw us into a regional conflict that would trigger strikes on Aus's capital cities, My comment was , how would you get away in time before the roads would be choked with cars?
How would you decide that it's time to react?
Would most people just sit there in disbelief, waiting for others to sort everything out, which probably wouldn't happen.

Do any people even have a sort of, garage or shed with shelves with temporary camping gear, all ready and clean, that could be thrown into a vehicle or trailer within half an hour to do a runner before everyone else panics and blocks every exit?
Would the authorities just suddenly shut the place down in some sort of stupid "do something but really ruin everything" lockdown to try and stop panic that actually results in more troubles?
We know that our politicians are unable to make reasonable decisions to keep society tracking straight in a crisis. They are man-children who lived in a union or university taxpayer-funded bubble with no leadership skills whatsoever.
Stupid subject?
Anyone have any sort of plan, even a weak one, of where to go quickly, and how to get there?

Agreed, and it wouldn't involve a vehicle or anything electronic. If I can't carry it on my back it's a hindrance not an asset.

very sound thinking :thumbsup

i don't think it would be too far fetched to imagine a society breakdown like in the mad max 2 movie . once shops run out of food in the suburbs gangs of people subscribing to "survival of the strongest" would eschew, such is human nature. the actions of people during covid showed me this . i already have stockpiled plenty of toilet paper  military on the streets of cities and suburbia with a martial law situation is something i'd try to get away from .

staying mobile and heading bush would only be viable as long as you have fuel or can get it . towns in the middle ages had fortified walls for a reason , this type of practical thinking would make sense in such a situation as the one in wapiti's post . i'd load my toyota with as much diesel , water and rifles and ammo and try to find sanctuary in a regional town i guess . i know one thing , people with practical skills in metal work , mechanics and medical training would be far more valued than computer techs, uber drivers and baristas :D
food wise i could live of goat and wallaby for meat quite comfortably , they're common in south east QLD , but fruit and vegetables are a necessity that would be hard to come by except in farming communities

backup plan would be to head out to wapiti's , and if he doesn't fire a warning shot i might have a chance :P

Just there seems to be a craze about this online, seems to be a big movement fearing the worst, and so many people taking advantage of selling cords wrist bracelets and bug-out packs and silly stuff that is pointless.
I'm not asking people divulge their favourite hidey hole, c'mon!
Just wondering if this huge change of sentiment is here also and people see any substance in it or noticed it. Seems ridiculous to me.

Is it really a thing people think about, or is it just crap? Conversely, are there people out there just do not think about where the future is headed? There seems to be a massive industry running along underneath the surface. Seems to be big money driving it, and a big lack of faith in the future.

There also seems to be this real thing about "bugging out to the bush". tell you what, we've seen this too and do not want the any of the clowns that drove society over the cliff to come out here and put the pressure on us and expect to be welcomed.

I thought about this when fuel started going up a few months ago. I'd go to the shops and buy up all the toilet paper and other non-essential stuff like a loon and start wearing a surgical mask everywhere and constantly sanitise my hands whilst looking disapprovingly at anyone who wasn't driving an electric vehicle with greens party stickers on the back window.

Na, I'd be at home painting the ZD Fairlane matt black and mounting mad max style stuff to it, while making my 35 year old cricket gear into post apocalyptic PPE while getting the wife working on good recipes for eastern grays.. :)

with regards to peoples mindset i think the "prepper" view has finally caught on in OZ . when you look at all the negative news on the idiot box and the internet about how unstable the world is lately i think it's making people worried , and preparing a plan B . the uselessness of our supposed leaders and the ozzie defence force whittled down to a shadow of it's former self is worrying . the small chinese task force that staged live fire exercise of our east coast had more firepower than our entire navy combined . that and killer AI is also in peoples minds . the worlds had it's ups and downs , civilizations rise and fall . but more than ever media/social media are warping peoples perspectives . if there's any real shift in society to prepping this is the driver . i've pretty well much unplugged from it all. i get my news from sky on my computer home page and i watch movies and series on netflix, when i'm not listening to my records with a bottle of red . so i'm not overly stressed about things
i'm aware of what's happening in the world, but i'm not losing sleep over things . i could grab all the necessaries in half hour into my toyota and be gone if i had to. i'll make common sensed decisions when, and if, i have to . if i had to bug out , heading bush is a logical choice . i have skills to contribute and a level head on my shoulders , i'm sure i'd fit in somewhere

Personally I find the abovementioned possibilities 99% absurd if you really think about it.

Not as in, IF it may come to pass,, but when.
Why on earth presume that the cities will cop a flogging. The kind of stuff that will get lobbed when the time comes won't only affect cities.

And don't forget, you are talking about HUMANS,,,,,,, The most evil and vicious animals on the face of the planet.

City people will (if they can) try to run to the country. Why ?
They won't be any safer there, and the people that are already there won't appreciate a horde of invaders from the city. :problem:

It will be mostly a case of mass confusion and I'd liken it to a huge mob of sheep that have a pack of feral dogs attack them in the dark.
They all run like crazy, (stampede) have no idea of where they are going or why,,,,,,,, and will flatten fences in their blind rush.
Come daylight, those that are lucky enough to have survived the first onslaught will stand or mill about in a daze.

In the long run, ordinary people will be no match for, and will stand little chance against the likes of the weapons used when that time comes.

Me,,,,,, I will stay put, and take my chances,, with what little I've got.

that's sound thinking . mind you , where you live mate is not under the serious threat of marauding bands of starving bogans as i am where i live . in such a event i'd have to fortify my house , backyards not easy access which is good . food and water would be the biggest issue with a breakdown in social order and panic . at least in the bush i could nail a wallaby for meat , i'm not to keen on eating the neighbourhood cats and dogs where i live  in the right spot i could boil water as required , i'd possibly find a nice out of the way place on the condamine river to camp around kilarney
actually i think a lot of suburban/city folk just wouldn't survive . you'd be surprised how many i've spoken to are horrified that i shoot and eat animals . oh they like eating meat, but the sight of raw meat makes a lot of them squeamish , let alone having to butcher a animal giving them a mental breakdown
we've gone from a country of hardy pioneers to woke new world order citizens in the coastal cities

your right about if a foreign military invaded most people would be about the same as dazed sheep . i think in the future any sort of gorilla resistance fighting would be useless against AI drones with thermal tech . bottom line is i consider these possibilities, but don't dwell too much on them . too busy trying to live the best life i can , hunting and travelling around this once great country , and trying to wake up the sheeple to the traitorous labour guv'ment we have

Yeah, no point running when an AI robot can run faster, and can see you in its thermal.
I laugh at the idiots on the sideline clapping and cheering these so called achievements on.

And if you plan on sitting on a stockpile of food you've prepped throughout the years, then you better have good defence skills, cause you'll be a huge sitting duck. Expect many unwanted visitors.

It was just something that others brought up here, certainly not what I think or put much thought into.
I didn't realise what a popular thing this "prepping thing" is out there until I was told and started to look.
We live like preppers anyway I suppose, we need to be able to keep moving forward without needing society around us. Not just this rubbish about shelves full of canned baked beans, how silly, but all tools, parts for everything you use, all the gear to fix or make stuff, the ability to do all that, to make energy, comms fuel and food. That's just normal to us. No 15 minute corner shop trips to get everything here. It's normal.

But people showed me online how there's even survival shops and online youtube dudes selling already-packed "go bags" full of stuff you can grab and go, here in Australia! I am not surprised the yanks are into this craze, but Aussies?
Visitors we had that I though would know better, or think differently, have this as a real scenario!

What kinda p*sses me off is people we had here as visitors all say "Oh we'll just come out here with you guys"
"you got fuel and unlimited food" "you can teach us all this stuff and we can build a new community"
All I can think of is just, well I hope that never happens and probably never will, because most people would be like putting an anchor chain around our legs.
I can just imagine, people just showing up and being a drain on us, bringing their politics and baggage with them, and their victimhood as well.
Not to mention when they run out of their other needs, like drugs for their medical afflictions both physical and mental, tobacco and alcohol addictions and the whining that would bring, and "someone else will save us" attitudes.

Seeing as that subject came up and we were in a position to think about it and see how there's a huge industry bubbling along about it. It is interesting to hear other people's opinions, or if people are even aware of this big industry selling stuff and frightening people to keep them buying.

The sooner that the world’s population sits up and takes notice of the old prophecy that in effect says,, “after WW3 we will have to fight with sticks and stones” the sooner we MIGHT have some semblance peace. But I’m certainly not holding my breath waiting for that. We are our own worst enemy.

Why would you even think of going anywhere???

The first thing to do is eliminate any breath from anything you love, or send them away. . tough decision…

Then you fight..

FMD , don’t run , don’t hide, fight…

Why are we talking about running ???????

Do you really think that if our borders were penetrated, you could hide from 1.4 billion Chinese…

That’s the problem with this world, everyone is to woke, their first instinct is to run.

in the event of a invasion of a foreign military , if you want to stand against trained troops , that may or may not be on par with the marines with their warrior mentality , good luck . myself , i'd draw a example from the french resistance fighters of WW2 and do more damage from where they don't expect it . i would probably get taken out eventually , but so long as i took quite a few with me i'd be happy . strategy and cunning trumps blind bravery in that circumstance in my book

9.3 x 64 says “don’t hide, fight” But I believe the original context of this thread is aimed squarely at the masses. Mr & Mrs Average. Fair enough for Macho men to have a go, or whoever may have skills/training that could be employed. But,, if a conflict does not prove to be WMD, and drags on, then Big Rich’s point can come in to play. Resistance fighters can and do come from all walks of life. However, the entire ball game will be totally different to WW2 this time round.

Yes, completely agree.
But your last sentence is key…
Do you really think the situation would be the same as Europe?
Germany was fighting two fronts, Russia/Stalingrad and the West.
If China invaded in masse, do you think we could really resist?
I don’t think it’s about being macho, I think it’s about protecting loved ones and fighting on…

That is what the original intent was, what would you do if society dropped its guts - it might be a Chinese ICBM because Aus stood by the US if the chinks invaded Taiwan, it might be a real epidemic (instead of the last one, a "let's see if everyone does what we say"), it might be a cyber-attack or AI attack that kills power, comms, internet and all food and fuel to cities, whatever.

I do not think any sane person would attempt to resist a foreign force and that is BS anyway.
The biggest issue would be the unprepared, social-media and lounge-lizard masses freaking out in panic and dropping their guts. If you are in a city, you better be ready to go down and be a victim, I reckon.

The biggest danger to any of us stuck in Urban-ville will be staying there, and having something everyone else wants. Actually even being there.

So the question was, not whether you would resist an invader, but if something terrible happens, will you go and do you have a plan. Or I guess, would you just sit there and hope for the best, or maybe even think it is all a dream, or even a movie?
Because frankly, I was shocked at how big this prepper movement is and the rubbish that is being peddled. I had some idea, but not the interest.

Yeah mate, tradie life.
Mobile cranes actually.
230am every day, even Sunday.
8pm, lights out.
Then throw random night shifts filled with strong lattes to keep the blood pumping, and the last 30yrs has become a constant blur.
Hopefully winding right back after Olympics, so long as the billionaires don't create another "scenario" to send the silly sheep bat s**t crazy again. My spidey sensors are tingling though. Something's not right and we all know it. Suspenseful sort of.

I have the attention span of a gold fish when it comes to movies. Love books though.

It will be hardest for people with health issues and addictions like caffeine, nicotine and sugar. but anybody that requires medicines, like insulin is going to have to research natural ways to maintain some degree of function without the medicines. The rest of us really just need water, and a means of catching the various meat packages that freely populate the bush, most of which can be eaten raw if required. The idea of stockpiling canned food is ridiculous and ties you down to a specific place, which will eventually be known, and will eventually need to be defended, on an increasing scale that will eventually break any defense you might put up.

If you are going to stockpile anything start with basic medicines, like antibiotics. Even for minor infections that won't go away you still need lots of antibiotics to kill it off.

I doubt I would have any interest in trying to combat an occupying military, I'd just be looking to get as remote as possible and hunker down for however many years I need to.

I laugh at the idiots on the sideline clapping and cheering these so called achievements on.

And if you plan on sitting on a stockpile of food you've prepped throughout the years, then you better have good defence skills, cause you'll be a huge sitting duck. Expect many unwanted visitors.

Like everything. Cross that bridge when we get there. We've built our own prison system so we must cop whatever it throws our way. After all, it's our hands around our own throat.

your up early mate :D you a sleepless old tradie like me ? ;)

defending your food and supplies during times of chaos is why AR's are popular with preppers i think ;) i'd say more on this subject , but posting the reality of how to deal with marauders on the net isn't a good idea with the laws and monitoring we have these days . i've been saying to people for years this modern internet world is a house of cards . if the net crashed tomorrow , social breakdown would happen fast . there's a good movie on this "leave the world behind" , made 2023 . cheers

Haha.

Love books though.

yeah righto , you driving a franna or something bigger ? spider senses tingling hey ? :) just as well i stocked up on a heap of discounted canned goods at my local IGA $2.49 for cans of heinz hearty vegetable chicken , and vegetable soup as well . got about a dozen cans , and quite a few discounted cans of baked beans , the ultimate prepper food :P the vege soup will come in handy if i'm eating wallaby out bush somewhere if i have to bug out

I'm one of the rare ones that can confidently operate both.
Spent my career predominately in slews, but love a good milk run in the franna.

I've stepped right back now. Getting older and not chasing the money or accolades anymore. Made my money and used it wisely. Lived well within our means.

The new 40t frannas are cool. Slow, but lifting wise, bloody handy, especially moving the larger slew gear around.. cause that's what frannas were built for...(Franna drivers cussing me now) :sarcasm:

I think everyone is noticing these weird times now. If your sences aren't tingling, you're still voting Labor in the belief you'll get a job.

We were fortunate to have a cheap property before the gates throat tickle arrived.
It's prepped for about 6 months at any given time. Half my s**ts there now, as I spend most of my spare time there...and my licence is that address also, because we'll be moving there very shortly. Just got a few things in this putred city to sort first.
Waiting for a lockdown to pop its head up.

a lot of people are mixed up when it comes to what's essential . my priorities , water, canned food, ammo, diesel , not necessarily in that order . i have proper water containers to take up to 40 litres . i bring water with me for drinking and cleaning when i stay up the road cause i've learnt how valuable it is to those that live bush . i also have a first aid kit , basic mechanic tools , including zip ties, plastic garbage bags and duct tape, this gear is always in my fourby already, as well as spare fan belts and radiator hoses . i'd stash my collector rifles at home, 308 and 223 tikka , 22lr cz 452 are what i'd take . using prepper logic the most commonly available ammo . if i had a pistol it'd be a 357 revolver or a 9mm. in a society collapse a shortened 12ga in easy reach in my fourby would also be desirable i think ;) . i could head for the bush and not want for too much , at least for a while until i run out of canned food and diesel . not to mention starving sheeple trying to take it . damn, i've just thought i should have a fishing hand line and basic tackle in the toyota as well . taking a full size rod isn't practical for space and durability wise to my thinking. there's some big cod in the mole river :D they taste muddy , but they'd keep you alive . actually fresh water catfish and eel can be good eating if caught in clean freshwater , trust me i know ;) . i remember people going nuts in shops during covid . no toilet paper, no problem if there's paperbark trees around . i hope it's a three ply tree

. finding a safe haven where my skills in metal work, mechanics and common sense are valued would be the goal . trying to survive in a "apocalypse" environment on your own would not pan out long term . team work with others for a common goal is survival , has been since the dawn of time

I see no value in diesel or a vehicle. There is unlikely to be a ready supply of replacement fuel for a vehicle, at least not after a few days. And where would you be wanting to go anyway? Replacement tyres - seems equally unlikely to me. And if you can get into your hiding place with a vehicle it's not remote enough. Canned food could be a luxury for the first few days while you're setting up your first hideout. But carrying cans when food is all around you for the taking seems a wasted effort to me, I'd rather use that space for a spare pair of boots. Likewise shotguns, shotgun ammo takes up huge amounts of space compared to .22LR ammo, not to mention the incredible weight of it. A brick of 500rds of .22LR is pretty small, under 2kg, and will kill anything you might need to. And if I had to defend my spot against armed attackers I would much rather have 500rds of .22LR than 80rds of .223, or 60rds of .308, or 25rds of 12 gauge for the same amount of room in a pouch. And .22LR is significantly quieter, so you could be hunting your food for a long time before anybody notices you're in the area.

I doubt I would want to get involved in a group effort, just go bush, find a quiet remote spot to hang out for a while, then move on as people start encroaching and find your next spot. Eventually the world will settle down and then I might venture out to see what's happening.

I've just loaded 40kg of ammo into two ammo crates for eight days of shooting in QLD. I'm taking a little more than I plan to use, just to be sure. The minimum I need is 100rds of .45ACP, 250rds of .44-40 pistol ammo, 300rds of .44-40 rifle ammo, 50rds of .30-30, 250rds of 12ga shells, and 50rds of .22LR. I'm not shooting the long-range matches or I would need .45-70 ammo as well. Some of the matches can be shot multiple times, and you might get some stage reshoots due to equipment failure, so you need plenty of extra ammo. 200gn and 230gn ammo adds up quickly, in weight and volume, but shotgun ammo is a big step above those.

I'm taking 30 litres of water again but last year I ran out and had to drive into town to buy more water. Last year we saw 44C I think, this year the forecast isn't looking at getting over 30C, with 9C being the coldest nights.

I'll probably be bringing two grandkids home in my little car, with all my gear, so I had to build a proper folding bed in there and make sure everything packs in tight to leave two extra seats free for them.

well , i suppose i depends on your circumstances , and the ones that might eventuate . i'd have a couple of hours drive to get out bush away from the coast , so for me a vehicle is a necessity, and canned goods will keep me supplied till i got set up in my chosen spot , no refrigeration necessary . the vehicle is a means to a end . my fourby is big enough to take all the gear i listed and more . being able to stay mobile could be a advantage for survival. with regards to taking my 223,308 , it's more about protecting my gear and not being outclassed in defensive capabilities . a 308 will punch through a car door more than a 22lr , and take out a radiator or engine if required . 22lr for quiet hunting for sure . in such a circumstance as being discussed other "refugees" would possibly be a threat when circumstances are dire. but all this is hypothetical

All this survival talk reminds me of another recent discussion under the scopes and optics banner. I’d go so far as to say that all of the “modern” electronic scopes would become redundant in a “Worst case scenario” along with 98% of all other similar gear. LOL.

Well anything that relays on comes would be gone, phones, GPS, internet etc.
That alone would drive the majority of the masses to despair.

We learned last terrible drought to be completely self sufficient, we have solar bores, underground piping, unlimited food etc.
We can't just turn on a tap with town water supply that never ends, go to the shop for packaged food etc without planning.
Our needs now are just enjoying the excesses of consumerism, but we can easily do without.
We also don't need to do a runner.
But we are well aware that anyone from the cities who manages to get out here without being chopped up in a traffic jam of masses thinking they can escape the inevitable mess they have made a life in, just waiting to collapse in on them, will expect us to share.
I won't be too keen to do that.
