22 Ammo

Post by Peter988 » 02 Oct 2026, 2:31 pm

Been having some fun testing different brands of 22 ammo in the new Tikka. Some have been pretty good, shooting moa or very near. Some awful. Had one brand the other day that cloverleafed 1st and 2nd in the bull, spat the 3rd and 4th 6 inches left, then put the 5th back in the bull. I like to think I shoot better than that lol. Ultimate this will be knocking rabbits over. I don’t shoot at a range. So I am only testing “hunting” type. Not low velocity stuff. Just wondering what people are having success with?

RWS HP subs are often sold at decent brick prices and shoot nicely.

CCI HP subs are pretty consistent shooters and a more effective-looking hollow point.

I still have a brick or 2 of the old Aussie-made Win subs, and they were my go-to at about $85 a brick.

My 22 didn't like HV ammo much, but CCI mini-mags could shoot a decent group.
The Velocitors became available just the other year, and man can they shoot, I was shocked.

Heard good reports on cheap Armscor ammo, and my 22 mag banned gun liked it.
You need to find a shop that isn't profiteering and jacking it up to cost a bit under the other brands, though.
I quickly got over 22 ammo testing, and single packs cost too much.

I did test some Aguila varieties, and didn't they vary in price.
The one that shot really well was a cheaper sub.
Spent hours internet price shopping and that model was just unobtainium when I decided to get a brick or 2.

The rifle match, and standard rifle models didn't shoot nearly as well.

Amscor and Aguila have been two of the better ones.

Remington 22 ammo no good.
Winchester the same, no good.
Some CCI stuff is fairly accurate and readily available. Have had some bad boxes though.

Aguila probably the most consistent I've had. These are just my experiences. 22 is a finicky round... just buy lots of 50 pack small boxes and try them all out. You won't spend much and eventually you'll find a good one to settle on. If you find a really good one write the box and batch number down
All one needs is a 270-Win. That's all!

Cci velocitor for everything from rabbits to fellow deer yes fellow deer shot out to 80 meters they never go any further than 20 yards .
It has been very accurate in the five rifles that I've tested it in and two pistols .
I use them for when animals are bigger than rabbits like foxes and above but if I'm just shooting rabbits because of the cost I actually find the cci Subsonic hollow point the one in the 100 round plastic container exceptionally good value and very good performing mushrooms fantastic killing for such a slow bullet all the way past 150 yards

I’ve tried about 10 or 12 brands. I will have to drag the stats out and put it up here. I head bush again in about five weeks so I will stock up a few more brands before then.

Yes - I have met him and he really knows his stuff. They must be a good bullet to work with a chest shot. I’ve shot plenty of pigs with a 22 over the years but all were head shot. I’ve had opportunities to shoot fallow when out chasing bunnies but always passed on it.

I read it again, not "self explanatory" at all. You don't mention where the hunt was and your profile lists you as one of us, you show a photo, state what you used but never where. That is why I asked if it was here.

I would love to blood the CZ515 22 mag on a close-range meaty, but only got till near the end of next year on the second last week of the steelback.
Then the Velocitors will have to be the big-game rimmy cartridge.

Velocitors are a great thing, about 1,400 or more fps from memory, and like lots of the late batch CCI ammo shoots even better groups than I ever expected.

On a test day, outdoors at the normally windy range, a Velocitor group took the group of the day.
It wasn't a single ragged at 50m, but f_k it was close.

Another test at a nighttime outdoor range in the burbs, CCI std took out the ribbon, and it was a single ragged.
I was stoked, as they used to throw the last shot flyer in every time.

No more rimmy ammo testing for me, but I will still try a single pack of hunting ammo if I see a brand of interest.

What I did notice when my CZ went bad was those RWS HP subs that I got many years back on sale for $85 can still be picked up at good sales prices, seem to be less greedflation affected than other ammo.
The reason I still have them is that they shoot slightly off the POI that I had sorted for plinking, group shooting, and hunting 40gr ammo of 3 diff brands.
HV hunting ammo just shoots a bit higher, so OK for purpose.

My previous, very old, Winchester liked Stingers but the new Tika doesn’t quite so much.

Don't be afraid to give the CCI Stingers a go.
They performed better for me than the Velocitors or CCI standard in the last 2 or 3 rimfires I've owned. They were the pick of the bunch for my Sportco 62S last week also
