Fixed powered Scope

Post by MeccaOz » 30 Oct 2014, 11:40 pm

ok guy's, who uses a fixed power and on what do you use it ? Also why did you choose it over a variable? I have the theory on why a fixed power "Can" be a better choice, but wanted to see who what and why uses them in real life ? Ive asked all my mates and they all use variables at least now. I myself have always gone the variable route too, so I'm very curious.

I've got a fixed SWFA SS 6x scope that I got because I wanted a mil reticle with mil-turret adjustments without breaking the bank (It was about $400). It was a hassle to get a hold of but it's so far worked pretty flawlessly and I don't mess with variable zoom options much so the fixed power doesn't bother me. If I were going for longer range shooting I would probably get the 10x.

I have a Nikon Monarch x4-16 which I like but it doesn't have the mil reticle. I only ever found myself cranking up the zoom to try and get a better picture of where my holes were on the paper, I pretty much always had it dialed back down to 4x for shooting. If I could get the same quality scope with variable zoom I'd go for it but if I can get a fixed power that fits my needs I'll be happy with that too.

Fixed 12x Leupold M8 on the 222 Howa, fixed Jap Tasco 4x on the 22 Brno and Jap Tasco 6x on the 22 Savage - reason being that's what was available in those days (30yr old + scopes) haven't had a need to change em as they still work and work well.

Got a fixed 4x40 on the .308 baikal, for the simple reason it's the Sh!ttest scope I have in saying that it matches the rifle perfectly. Also had an 8x56 nighteater, fool proof awesome spotlighting scope sold it with the rifle should have kept it, I liked it better for hunting simple no variables, literally, get familiar and quicker in guessing ranges and hold over, seriously looking at another if I can't afford a Burris eliminator

Yep, they rock. $800.00 with no magnification, go figure when people argue about a 3-9 for $200.00.

I'm sticking to an expensive 1X red dot. That's all I need in my home town. Unlimited eye relief and awesome field of view. Shoot with both eyes open like every scope should be used.

I'm game to take it out to 200 yards on large game with a heart/lung shot…bunnys?…probably not…but I'd have a go…30-06 only has to touch them and they're dead.

Seen some Youtube vids of blokes in USA getting out to about 400 with a half decent rest.

Generally I'd stick to sub 100 yards.,.,thats about the max distance you can do in the jungle around my place…and for that the Aimpoint 1X is perfect.

Thanks for that mate, I suspected it might struggle on the little stuff at longer ranges, as you said designed for the close in work which by the sounds of it it excels at.

I don't mind those sorts of sights, I had a look through a Leupold version a few years back, very impressive and would work a treat for the close in stuff that's on the move. I'd own one if I was chasing pigs etc that were on the run in close quarters type situations where quick snappy shots are needed.

The battery is said to last for 50,000 hours. I've had mine for a few years now and no sign of it going flat. I just turn it on at the start of the day and turn it off at the end.

I have it zeroed to be dead on at 50 yards with 180gn Core Lokts in my .30-06. So its still going up at 100 and has only dropped a few inches at 200. I also use 150gn and 125gn. I don't bother rezeroing it. I know the ballistics of each cartridge and don't really have to adjust anything. They will all be in the kill zone. It's not a bench rest queen so close enough is good enough for me.

Another good thing about them is there is no chance of copping the scope in the head on recoil.

I've used the Leupold FX-II 4x33mm on many occasions, on my mates Remington.

Not particularly expensive, I think they're around $450?

Very clear, sharp reticle, everything you'd expect from Leupold for the money.

I was thinking the same thing, could be one scope I can forward mount on my Ruger Scout, that will work in day and night. LOL I think you should be on commission mate

Marksman something model.

Fantastic scope. Those things are sharp!

I had a stroke of luck last year.

I picked up a Schmidt Bender 10x42 Klassik for $300 at a garage sale where I think they were just clearing left behind junk without caring much for price, they just wanted to get rid of everything.

Love. It.

Had a Nikon 14x on before and can still see better with the S&B at 10x.

(Not knocking the Nikon, it's a fraction of the price of course)

Steel tube Weaver 6x40 on the treble duece. 4x28 Nikko on the .22. Why do I use them? They were already on the rifles and they do the job. When I finally decide which rifle I wanna buy, she'll be wearing a variable. Nothing wrong with options ;)

If a fixed scope does it for you they're great.

More compact and lighter than a similar variable, what's not to like.
