Keeping PTA and bolt together.

Questions about Queensland gun and ammunition laws. QLD Weapons Act 1990.

Keeping PTA and bolt together.

Post by John Ryan » 20 Jun 2016, 7:48 am

So I was introduced to someone who shoots by a colleague from work, got to spend half the evening with him showing me his toys and reloading setup.

One thing he mentioned was how he keeps each individual PTA with the bolt for the particular rifle it is assigned to?

First I've heard of the practice can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

How can he keep the PTA? Is it a photocopy? (As the original PTA is handed in to the dealer and sent to LRD)...

If you're talking about the confirmation of ownership / license - I keep a copy of these so if the police arrive and for some reason their paperwork doesn't line up - I at least have some evidence to support what I have.

He must have had a bad experience or something, i keep bolts in rifles and my little pink sheets filed away within the safe, not a eye lid was blinked last inspection when i had a recently aquired 12g and no paperwork for it, s/n was recorded and action caliber etc etc was noted and that was it, vicpol has a policy which allows bolts in rifles before anyone questions that, i do it so they don't get mixed up, banged around exposed, dusty but always clear any firearm ( obviously ) when it is being the chosen one

I'm still awaiting on my first to arrive so hadn't seen one till then.
One was a green piece of paper and the other appeared to be a photocopy.

Got me f***ed why you'd bother doing it, anyway if it gives him a warm fuzzy feeling doing no harm I guess but completely pointless really.

Did seem a little odd to be honest but each to their own I guess.

In Qld, what is called a PTA is actually 2 documents - the top is the permit which you get to keep - the bottom half of the paper is a notice of disposal. That's the part that goes back to licensing.

I don't need to, but I keep my permits in my safe. It's just a convenient place to keep them as a record.

If he had a green piece of paper that sounds more like a Notice of Transfer. A form 10... Our PTAs up here are blue.

So generally you should keep them in a safe accessible place if needed ( i.e.: storage inspection etc) but should you carry it with the particular firearm you are using at the time?
Traveling to range or on route to go hunting?

Sorry if it's a silly question, just a newbie ;)

Naah i keep mine just for insurance, for proof i owned it if stolen or whatever, id never take it out with the firearm, it'll get lost, damaged and no one wants that info out there

Just my opinion anyway

You don't need to carry em mate, just leave em in the safe or wherever you like to keep documents safe. The police already have all this info on hand anyway. :drinks:

I do keep a copy of my firearms registration papers in my range bag.

Escpecially handy if I go to the range with my pistols and realise I need ammo (NSW) so I can show my rego papers to prove I own a 9mm pistol.

Also have been pulled over and when asked if I had firearms in the car I was able to show the rego papers for the ones in the car. Mostly a time saver.
