Hi all, I'm a newbie to the forum and look forward to sharing ideas, particularly from the more experienced members.
I carry a Winchester .22 magnum lever action with a Schmidt & Bender scope.
Apart from my experience in the Armed Forces and a few bunnies for the pot when I was younger, I now enjoy the occasional club target shooting.
Looking forward to meeting you all on the forum.

Hey all,

I just joined up.

I'm from the backwoods of Arkansas, USA. I really like shooting. I'm a handloader. I cast my own lead bullets for both rifles and handguns. I even reload shotgun shells. But my main interest is with Wildcat and odd ball cartridges. I have been in contact with some of your countrymen discussing the 9.5 x 57 MS (375 Rimless Nitro Express 2 21/4") and I would like to learn more about the wildcat cartridges in Australia.

Happy to be here!

Hi everyone hope your all fine and dandy Don is my name,

Only just joined up on here so just introducing myself a little as well as firing a quick question off to ya legends,

I'm new to hunting since only acquiring my firearms license and rifles and haven't been shooting for long now,
Did a lot of shooting for pest, when I was a boy 25yrs or so ago but now I'm wanting to get into the hunt for big game, all set on pretty much everything needed except hearing protection as I've heard about noise cancelling ear buds and sound enhancing?

Would be greatly appreciated if some legend's could fill me in about decent protection and heighten sounds equipment or what you have used before.

thanks in advance Don

I can't advise on that particular type of hearing protection. But just let you know the USA, NRR rate of protection is not the same as the AU SLC80.
NRR is a significantly lower level of hearing protection.

See attachment
Example, 27db (reduction to the ear) in slc80 is equal to 34nrr. That's a huge difference.

Many shooters buy muffs quoted as a 25 nrr ratings thinking they are class 4, but they are really only class 3 under our system.

To get a true class 5 (the best) you need an nrr rating of 33. Rare as rocking horse sh1t.

New to this forum, but been on AusHunt, same username.
Liking my general hunting, esp. deer now that I have the property.
Targets? Depends on what is in town and what days off I get.

I see a few people here hunt near my NSW place (Bruxner hwy area), so I'll reach out when forum rules allow.

Hey all. First off thank you to everyone who's contributed here over the years.
There is a wealth of opinions and experience burried in some of these threads, it's truely amazing.
Some wise and very helpful people on here!

I've always worked in IT and I'll admit it now, to get it out of the way, I'm a sponge for information aka a nerd.
Sorry in advance for any less than straight forward question.

I had some shooting experience when very young, gone on spotlighting trips for fox/hare/rabbbits and I even got to do some field and game days, tons of fun even if I was being out shot by a 12 year old and his 80+ grandfather on more than one occasion :D
<insert women/life/work>

A few months back a friend/proprety owner telling me he had put up trail cams on his property to see what was going on there.... Samba every night!
*queue the gears turning in my head*

One peice of advice I seemed to have picked up along the way and strugle with constantly is: have a goal - and don't lose focus

*Harvest samba for meat
*Shoot PR at some level

These goals are meant to stop me buying firearms I don't need..... It..... hasn't worked too well thus far.
I've also be diving head first into reloading which is super interesting.

Hi all,

I'm Rob, from South Australia, and at the ripe age of 48, I've decided after many years to take up shooting.and hunting/pest control. I haven't fired a rifle for many years, being my uncle's old .22LR. Now, the kids have just about all grown up, and i can get a bit of time for myself, time to get out and get shooting. My wife is also talking of doing a bit of shooting together. I plan on, starting at a local range (when i find it), and then gradually go out for some hunting or get rid of some feral cats, foxes, rabbits etc. Thinking of starting with the ever reliable .22, and then step up to .223.
Have no licence
Have no guns
But I'm working on it all....

Both good choices. Perhaps a U/O 12g then.
Welcome.

Thanks, Oldbloke. Been wanting to get into shooting for many years, but life sort got in the way of that. Now, i'm nearly 50, and the kids have all pretty much grown up, it's time for me and the missus to do the things we want to do.

Morning and afternoon all.

Bit of an intro, been shooting since I was 8yo, that makes it 50 something years LOL. Yeah bit of an old bugga but I still love the sport as much as I can see.
I sold my .444 Marlin (crazy crazy loud thing that was) and .270w Sauer when I moved into the city but kept the BSA Martini International. Won a few comps with that even though it's a million years old. I can barely lift the thing now.
But now moved back to rural Vic and it seems they have an amazing club in Wodonga so I'll be popping over there for a bit of target practice till I get a decent centrefire again.
I hope to meet a few on here and perhaps go out on a pest/comp/deer shoot with you.
Cheers.

Yeah this is a really tough and confusing topic, I'm going through it at the moment with one of our suppliers at work. (Class 5 headsets for radio communications) Testing to AS/NZS1270/2002 compliance and actually certifying for it in Australia are 2 totally separate things and so are the test methods. The Aus standard changed a few years ago requiring the manufacturer of any equipment to be audited yearly to remain "certified" Many refused this is the audit needs to be done by someone other than the manufacturer but at the manufacturers cost which is huuuge if you're selling to a niche market. So now lots of equipment is tested to, not certified to. The headsets are still the same so all good.

G'day all. Just joined the Forum but I'm a long time shooter. At 75yo I'd be among the oldest members and I hope to be able to give help and advice where needed, but I'm not silly enough to think I know everything and will ask for questions as well.
I do have a question about the forum - is there a classifieds section as I'm looking for a rifle to purchase.

Hi all, I've been shooting on the farm for around 45 years, mainly rabbits, foxes, roos and the odd cat, but also hot on pigeons, miners, rats and whatever else becomes a menace around the place. Only started reloading in the last couple years - that and the purchase of some night vision gear has rejuvenated my shooting, while putting a serious dent in the local ferral populations.

Recently I'd made up my mind to buy another centrefire, but might have to wait until the dust settles, as the gun safe is already near capacity.

Afternoon, thought I'd re-introduce myself it's been many years since I've been on this forum can't even remember my username or password. I've been a gun and hunting enthusiast since a child and like not only guns but all things mechanical, I'm a machinist and do a lot of cad/cam work for a living. When not hunting I'm usually making knives or casting metal and or rebuilding small engines. I guess the recent gun reforms have brought me back into the fold to re engage with our great shooting community, I don't think there is much point in sitting around by yourself getting pissed off about it when I could be engaging and productive. Hope everyone has a great Sunday.

Hi Makerboi, what area of Vic are you in? I'm chasing somebody to machine me some smallish items. I'm also hatching a plan to use all the spent brass from the club to make the end of year trophies rather than have it go to scrap.

Re: The introduce yourself thread (combined)

Post by Damo300 » 14 Mar 2026, 7:06 am

I've been rude and just posting away without introduction.
Apologies everyone, I did not see this section.

My name is Damian.
I'm a 48yr old construction worker, married with 3 kids.

I was raised in SEQ around firearms, but due to the family dissolving I lost my access to them just before 96, and in 96 I decided I couldn't be bothered with all the new rulings, even though we only had bolt rifles....and a ruger 10/22, but who didn't have one of them?
I couldn't believe they boxed them in with the dangerous firearms. Kinda laughable really.

So my firearms were sold off, and forgotten about. I was young and did not have adult time available... haha.

30yrs later, it's time to return to what I love.
I only hunt for meat, and noxious pest eradicating. I'm not interested in trophies, and I will not kill an animal for "fun".
I only really visit a range for zeroing and new setups, or to allow virgin shooters the experience of shooting before they jump in head first. I get a real buzz out of helping first timers.

I reload my hunting rounds.
I've developed loads for all my rifles. I believe it helps me to give the animal a quick and humane ending, as well as being cost effective to our household.

My partner in crime is my brother inlaw (we married sisters) and we both really enjoy hunting public land.
I'm all for hunting properties and sometimes partake in the opportunity if I have the spare time, but we consider that to be catching, not hunting.

Took a few trips to work the deer out, but we are back at successfully stocking the freezer again.
So good to have the old memories of hunting come back. I swear we are meant to do this.
It's a man's duty to his family.

I like to give the primary producers a hand as well, if I can.
I registered with the SSAA farmer assist program but have not been able to attend any contracts as of yet.

My time is precious at the moment, but I also understand that I will never get this time back, so juggling it all can become a frustrating cluster at times.

Look forward to catching up with some of you sometime out in the field, and sharing more outrageous stories of life around hunting and firearms.

Regards
Damian.

Hi everyone.
Long time lurker here.
Been reading this forum for years and have enjoyed it, lots of decent, genuine blokes here.
Been wanting to join up for a while now but have been reluctant because of certain things.
About me, i am 46, i live on a rural property in upper Central West NSW and was born and raised on a rural property.
I love the bush immensely and hate cities and crowds. Lover of dogs and have four, a red kelpie male and three cattle dog bitches.
I have been shooting and reloading since i was a kid on the farm, My dad and Pop shot to and i reloaded for all of us using Simplex gear, I still use that same gear today as well as more gear that has been was added along the way.

I am old fashioned, especially for my age and i hate technology.

I am a welder by trade and run my own business, 95% of my work is onsite, everything from transport, truck, earthmoving, farming and mining gear is what my work revolves around, all over the place. Ive run my own business for 15 years and before that i was in mines and engineering shops. In the early years i worked on our family property and other large properties with cropping, stock ect,
I am a lover of older Sakos and Winchester levers.
I love the less common and obsolete calibres and reload for them.
I mainly shoot those long legged jumpy things, pigs, foxes, rabbits, crows, dogs ect.
In everything from thick scrub to open crop paddocks spotlighting, thermal ect, from vehicles and quads.
I love fishing, camping, 4wds, bikes, anything outdoors really. I prefer a beer and a rum around a nice fire at home than to be in a pub.
Cheers.
